Cannabis Flower vs. Edibles: Choosing the Right Format
Flower and edibles are the two most popular cannabis formats. They differ in how fast they work, how long they last, and how you dose them.
Onset time
Flower (smoked or vaped) takes effect within minutes — usually 1 to 5 minutes. Edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours because they are processed through the digestive system. This is the biggest practical difference between the two formats.
Duration
Flower effects typically last 2 to 3 hours. Edible effects last 4 to 8 hours, sometimes longer. Choose flower for shorter, more controllable sessions. Choose edibles for longer-lasting relief, especially for sleep.
Dosing
Flower dosing is intuitive — take one inhalation and wait. Edible dosing requires more planning. Massachusetts law caps individual edible pieces at 5mg THC. Start with one piece (5mg or less) and wait at least 2 hours before taking more.
- Flower: 1-2 inhalations, wait 5-10 minutes
- Edibles: start at 2.5-5mg THC, wait 2 hours
- MA limit: 5mg per piece, 100mg per package
When to choose flower
Choose flower when you want fast-acting effects with more control over your dose. Good for social situations, quick relief, or when you want the experience to end within a couple of hours.
When to choose edibles
Choose edibles when you want longer-lasting effects without smoking. Good for sleep, extended pain relief, travel-friendly consumption, and situations where discretion matters.
