The Cannabis Delivery Handoff Protocol
The handoff is where compliance becomes visible. Every driver follows the same protocol so every transfer is auditable.
The four-check handoff
Before any product leaves your hand, four things must be true. Skipping any of them breaks chain of custody.
- Correct address — confirm with customer's phone last-four and the order number.
- Correct recipient — verify government-issued photo ID against the order name.
- Correct age — 21+ adult-use or a verified medical card for medical orders.
- Correct customer state — never transfer to a visibly intoxicated recipient.
ID verification done right
You are the last line of defense against an underage or out-of-state handoff. This is the single most important compliance step in the whole delivery chain.
- Feel the card edges — most fake IDs have soft or laminated edges.
- Check the hologram angle — genuine state IDs shift color predictably.
- Cross-check the birthdate math — do the quick subtraction from today's year.
- If anything looks off, decline politely and message dispatch with photo of the ID.
Signature and proof capture
BudHub captures a signed digital receipt in the driver app on every handoff. Treat this as legally material — it is the proof this transfer happened.
When a handoff fails
Not every stop ends in a successful delivery. Failed handoffs must be documented and returned to the dispensary without breaking chain of custody.
- Customer not present — mark the order as failed in the app and return to the store.
- Refused ID or underage — polite decline, no confrontation, document in the app.
- Visibly intoxicated — decline the transfer and alert dispatch for guidance.
- Wrong recipient offered — never hand off to anyone other than the named account holder.
