ID and Age Verification for Budtenders
Every sale begins with an ID check. A budtender who skips this step risks the dispensary's license — and their own job.
Who needs to be checked
Everyone. Every transaction. Even the regular who was here yesterday. Even when the line is long. This is non-negotiable.
What you are checking for
A government-issued photo ID that is current, genuine, and belongs to the person standing in front of you.
- Photo matches the customer's face.
- Birthdate proves 21+ (adult-use) or valid medical card age.
- ID is not expired.
- ID is not visibly tampered with, laminated over, or reprinted.
Detecting fake IDs
Most fake IDs fail at the physical feel test. Run your fingernail across the surface — genuine state IDs are smooth and uniform. Raised lettering, bubbled laminate, or unusual flex are all red flags.
Polite refusal
If you decline a sale, stay kind. 'I can't accept this ID today' is enough. Do not confiscate. Do not argue. Call a manager if the customer escalates. Document the refusal in the POS system per your state's rules.
