Budtender Training · Module 1
Budtender Consultation Basics
A good budtender listens first, recommends second. The goal is the customer leaves with a product that matches their goal, not the one with the highest margin.
The opening question
Never open with product. Open with intent. 'What are you hoping to get out of this today?' tells you everything you need to guide the conversation.
- Ask about the desired outcome: sleep, relief, focus, social, creative.
- Ask about tolerance: first-time, occasional, regular.
- Ask about delivery method preference: smoked, vaped, edible, topical.
- Only then steer toward a category, then a product.
Reading the customer
Tone, vocabulary, and body language tell you how to pace the conversation. A first-time cannabis customer needs grounding. A regular customer needs efficiency.
Never guess — escalate
If a customer asks a medical question you're not trained to answer, say so. Point them to a licensed practitioner or a pharmacist. A budtender is not a doctor.
